Cardiac Regeneration: The Embryonic Program
One of the most striking findings in Tβ4 research is its ability to reawaken dormant embryonic repair programs in adult hearts. The Srivastava lab showed that Tβ4 activates integrin-linked kinase (ILK) and downstream Akt, promoting cardiac cell survival and migration. It also activates capsulin-positive progenitor cells and triggers organ-wide epicardial thickening, increasing capillary and vessel density.
The concept: adult mammalian hearts lose their regenerative capacity shortly after birth, but Tβ4 can remind them of their embryonic state. This is a frontier area of regenerative cardiology and a frequent topic of discussion among members interested in the basic science of tissue regeneration.
