AMPK and the Exercise Mimetic
AMPK is the body's master energy sensor, activated when cellular energy is low — most notably during exercise. MOTS-c has been shown to activate AMPK, which is why it's sometimes described as an 'exercise mimetic.'
The data behind that label are genuinely interesting. In diet-induced-obesity mice, MOTS-c improved insulin sensitivity, reduced body weight and fatty liver, and shifted plasma metabolites across pathways (sphingolipid, monoacylglycerol, dicarboxylate) that are elevated in obesity and type 2 diabetes. In human cohorts, plasma MOTS-c correlates negatively with fasting insulin and HbA1c, and aging reduces MOTS-c levels in muscle and blood.
This doesn't replace exercise, but it makes MOTS-c a compelling research target for metabolic health. The thread below covers where the preclinical evidence is strong and where human translation remains unproven.
