Telomerase, Telomeres, and the Cancer Question

Epitalon's claim to fame is telomerase activation. Telomeres are the protective caps on chromosomes; they shorten with each cell division until the cell senesces — the Hayflick limit. Telomerase lengthens them back, and reactivating it could, in theory, extend cellular lifespan.

The evidence is genuinely intriguing. Khavinson's work showed epitalon induces telomerase activity and telomere elongation in human somatic cells; a recent study confirmed telomere elongation in both normal and cancer cell lines, with normal cells showing 4- to 26-fold increases in telomerase activity.

But the cancer question is real. Telomerase is reactivated in ~90% of human cancers — it's how tumors achieve immortality. Activating telomerase broadly, in principle, removes a brake on any incipient cancer cell. Researchers take this seriously. Members discuss epitalon with that tension front and center: promising longevity biology, with a theoretical risk that human use has not been studied enough to rule out.
