Overview
ARA-290 (cibinetide) is an 11-amino-acid synthetic peptide derived from the helix B domain of erythropoietin (EPO). It is engineered to activate the tissue-protective effects of EPO (via the innate repair receptor, a heteromer of EPO receptor and CD131) without stimulating red blood cell production, separating EPO's repair signaling from its hematopoietic effects.
Mechanism of action
ARA-290 binds the innate repair receptor (EPO-R/CD131 heteromer), activating anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-repair signaling downstream of EPO without the erythropoietic effects that complicate full-length EPO use. This allows it to be studied for neuropathic, inflammatory, and tissue-injury indications at doses that do not raise hematocrit.
